Cloud(y) Whether?
Is the title too cutesy? The gist here is to ask whether it’s time to put your apps, data and content into the cloud.
All the hype around cloud is now surpassed by AI, but it’s still a conversation for some folks. That’s why I am taking a moment to go over all the advantages of trusting your organizations data, applications and future to the cloud.
Better Security. The leading cloud providers such as AWS and Azure (among others) have invested in the best infrastructure, processes and people. They have dedicated more resources to security with more potential options than any standalone, on-premises organization can deliver.
Scalability. Need to ramp up your platform for a big event, it only takes a few clicks, Once that event is over, it’s just as easy to size back down and save money. Certainly better than having to go server shopping.
Redundancy/Recovery. Cloud providers offer ways to quickly recover from any sort of data loss. They also offer easy to use methods to prevent it from happening in the first place. There’s no substitute for replication to very distanced remote sites. Even the default setup without replication is extremely resilient and reliable.
Cost Savings. I put this one last not because it’s the least important, but because it takes the most thought to achieve. With careful planning, a cloud environment can be much more cost effective than a local setup, provided the local setup is kept up and well maintained. Of course, having a decade old Linux box in the closet will be cheaper, but you get what you pay for there…
